I've hand blocked the body of my 1973 roadster down to the composite, what is the best process and products for filling and sealing the body for paint preperation, I've read that gelcoat isn't best product to use on SMC, is there a problem with older panels made of Genite?

Re: SMC paint prep.
If ALL your panels are of lighter gray material, regardless whether "Gennite" or SMC, I wouldn't use polyester gelcoat (Eckler's) because I don't think polyester products will adhere to those materials.
Later C3 cars made completely of the light gray materials have no gelcoat equivalent. Sand, clean, and prime just like you would a metal-bodied car. I have yet to be convinced that this whole gelcoat thing isn't overdone anyway.
If your car has some dark charcoal gray (black) panels, then those panels are polyester fiberglass, and polyester gelcoat can be used only on those panels. In my opinion, using gelcoat on some panels, and not others is a fool's errand unless you have reproduction polyester fiberglass panels, or some polyester fiberglass panels have repairs...i.e. a genuine need for gelcoat.- Top
