    John...

there is much discuss on this browm paper wrapped capacitor...the "black" band end of the capacitor is grounded to a stud on the the instrument panel. The capacitors other wire is attached to the ammeter "red" wire terminal on the passenger side. this wire can be attached to the "black" wire terminal on the drivers side and still funtion property. Do not forget that the AIM circuit wire illustration is backwards.

        FYI...

The capacitor is non-polar, meaning it doesn't matter which end connects to what. The black line on one end simply marks the lead wire that connects to the OUTER storage plate in the cap.

The through was IF the cap should wiggle/rub against adjacent metal surfaces and wear through the protective wax/paper wrap, which lead wire should make contact first...the one connected to ground or the one connected to B+. If the grounded side made first contact, no harm would result.

BUT, that thinking is pretty shallow. If there's enough friction/wear to 'saw' through the cap's outer package, it's simply a matter of time before you wear through the outer plate + dielectric and make contact with the inner plate that's connected to the hot side of the circuit!

                Ditto.
my 58 still has this original capacitor attached to the ammeter.
