    72 LT-1 Anti Diesel Soleniod P/N

    Was this P/N 1997409? If not what was it? Are they available at the usual restoration sources?

    Thanks,

    Steve,

    I'd go with 199740X, as noted below on my 350/200 car. Could be a 3,6,8 or 9 on mine.

    These solenoids are quite common, and I've picked up a few (or at least some very, very similar ones) by purchasing Quadrajets just for the bracket and solenoid. The bracket would be different for your Holley, of course, but Doc Rebuild has that. He also has a new Delco replacement solenoid, but it is not cheap.

        I believe the 1997409 solenoid is for 1973 and 1974 small blocks while 1114450 is correct for all 1972s. They both look, and with the proper adjustment, probably function alike. I thought these numbers were listed in the Judging Guide but I don't have access to mine at the moment.

            Sal,

            I don't "think" mine has ever been off my car (other than for my pictures or carb maintenance, to be exact). It's an early June built 72.

            The JG contains the numbers of the solenoids that mount to the right side of the intake, but not those that mount to the carb like this one.

                I used to find these solenoids at my local Carquest. I cannot remember the brand, but they were identical sans the part number

                    I had a chat with Joe Lucia on this...

                    Here's the pertinant text of our prior off-board conversation:

                    The original solenoid specified for 1972 Corvettes (with Q-Jet) was GM #7030604. That definitely is a Rochester Products part number. For several reasons, I think that this was a piece that included both the bracket + the solenoid.

                    In September, 1972, the GM #7030604 was discontinued and replaced by GM #1114450. I am fairly sure that this was the same solenoid, but minus the bracket (the price dropped by about half when the change was made so that supports the notion that it was a separate part). Also, the 1114450 is definitely a Delco Remy part number. The bracket would definitely have been a Rochester part number and the assembly of the bracket + solenoid also likely a Rochester part number. The solenoid, by itself, would logically have been just the Delco part number. So, everything "fits" so far

                        Jack, et al------

                        I did a little further research on this one. From what I can tell, the GM #1114450 and the GM #1997409 appear to be functionally identical. The 1997409 did not appear in SERVICE until the 1973 model year (late 1972) and was first cataloged for that model year.

                        In February, 1975 the 1114450 was discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by the 1997409 which continued to SERVICE all 1972-74 applications until July, 1982. At that time it was discontinued and replaced by GM #1997470 which remained the SERVICE part until March, 1988. GM #17111376 came along at that time. I believe that it's been discontinued now, too.

                        Regarding Patrick's 1972 with an apparently original 1997409, there are several possibilities:

                        1) Patrick's car was manufactured late in the model year and received the 1997409 (since it's functionally equivalent to the 1114450);

                        2) The GM #1114450 and 1997409 were used interchangeably during the 1972 model year. Just because the 1997409 does not appear to have entered SERVICE until late 1972, it's very possible that it was used in PRODUCTION well prior to that time;

                        3) Patrick's car, while having an apparently original solenoid, is not original but a replacement done in the February, 1975 to July, 1982 time period.

                        There may be other possibilities, too.

                            Joe,

                            Not having owned my car its whole life, anything is possible. I don't suspect that any of the owners prior to 1997 cared whether this solenoid was in place or not, so it seems unusual that an original would have been removed and this one installed. It seems like I've seen far more cars just have it removed as "emissions crap" when the owner doesn't understand what it is, reset the idle using the screw on the carb, and that's the end of it.

                            But, who knows.
