If you look closely, the rectangular holes have the screw holes for the desicant cover filled in with resin, from the factory. I have verified this with a Flint employee who built #245.

Early-mid 54 have the same rectangular holes but have screw holes for screws.

Late 54 and 55 with the round holes actually have steel inserts with threads for the desicant cover. They attach with regualar threads, not sheet metal type screws.

            FYI

Kent, do you feel that the trunk lid was original to the car? It would be uncharacteristic for an early car to have round holes. If so, it breaks the norm, but certainly could be real. Just odd.

Were the door holes, behind the dor panels, round or rectangular?
