    Re: c2 pad stamp

    Hi Stephen:

I'd say "so far so good" for what can be seen in your photo, but to get a better look you need to remove the paint. Use only a chemical paint stripper with no abrasion whatsoever, so that you don't scratch the surface.

One thing that people will want to see are the broach marks, which are fine parallel lines in the surface that were made by the machining process. You can see the broach marks in the attached photo of the pad on my car (believed to be the original factory pad).

By the way, other checks you should make on the block are the casting number and the casting date. These are located on the driver's side bellhousing flange and passenger side bellhousing flange, respectively.

Lastly, if you want to confirm that the trim tag is real and that the car's trim configuration matches the numbers on the tag, get a copy of Al Grenning's trim tag book from the NCRS book store. If you can't wait to get the book, one of us can at least check the trim number and exception code for you if you want. However, verifying that the trim tag itself is an original requires examining it under magnification.

                Stephen,

Here's the one with the crazy 6:
                http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6782/enginepadcroppedsmfj4.jpg

Can't really see any broach marks on my 67. They must have changed cutters just before mine. Original though, owner 39 years.

But it helps to remove the paint, gently.

Try using nail polish remover with a cotton swab. Gently rub back and forth after soaking little while. Repeat process until clean. I like to see the nos. alittle faded or light stamp around edges. Not the hard deep grove fresh look some restampes have. Broach marks tell some of the tale. But CE over the counter blocks with no stamp are out there. Try to see if the dates and casting line up. My 67 L-79 are all nos. within 1 week. Build B 13 7 Stamp VO20HT etc.

                                Stephen,

Your pad would be easier to see and evaluate if you could gently remove the paint. I think there's probably some very knowledgible people in your local NCRS Chapter who could look at the pad and tell you if it's authentic and appears to be correct. Al Grenning certainly knows pads, but his "affirmation" will cost you several hundred dollars. Good luck.
