    Firewall Gromet Sealant

I'm restoring a 1969. Does anyone know what kind of sealant to use on the firewall. Looking for something very close to the asphalt type used by GM.
    Thanks,
    Rick

Rick, I could tell you a product available in the desert southwest that is very close, but you and most of the world wouldn't know what I was talking about.

However, from a previous discussion thread, another close substitute would be the asphalt based liquid roofing sealant used to recoat built-up and mobile home roofs. It's easily available at home stores, comes in aluminum color, as well as black, and I believe in one gallon cans as well as five gallon buckets. Of course, black in the one gallon can will be the obvious choice...much more than you need, but it's relatively inexpensive.

The original firewall sealant was dribbled over all the installed firewall grommets, and the underhood joint of the heater box or AC evaporator assembly. Depending on the viscosity of the sealant, you may want to leave the lid off the can and let it breathe off the volatiles to thicken it up. Expect a certain amount of "messiness" with runs over and down the sides of the grommets and the heater box...not neat, but just like factory.

The original material may have been hot, or air was entrained as it was applied...the original material appears to have been somewhat "frothy" with bubbles. You won't get the bubbles in the roof sealant, but otherwise it will have close to original appearance and will do the sealing function like it was intended for that purpose.
