C2 -1966 License Plate Light Assembly

"Restoring" my license plate light assy. Like the JM references, I see a lot of "dull silver" paint on the outside of the housing. On the back side, I don't see a trace. So...I assume one of two conditions;

1. Every spec of silver paint has come off of the backside.
2. The backside was never painted

Can someone confirm on the originals if they were painted on one or both sides?

It is my impression that the originals were painted only on the visible side, and that the back side was some sort of gold hue plating. I think I formed that impression from looking at a NOS unit that had some differences from the originals, so the paint application on that unit was not necessarily correct.

In any event, the back side is not visible when the light is installed, so I wouldn't worry too much about the finish. It's probably more important that the back side be well protected from rust. These lights seem to rust mostly from the back side.
