    1969 40658 Fuel Pump

    Any suggestions on where to go for a 40658 AC fuel pump for a 1969 L-46 motor? I have tried every where. Thank you for your help.

          The AC 40658, aka GM #6417337, fuel pump can be very difficult to locate. There are several reasons for this. First of all, this particular pump had only 1968-69 Corvette with small block application. It's possible that there were some MD/HD truck applications but I doubt it. Second, the 40658 was discontinued from the GM parts system in August, 1971 and replaced by the AC 40709, aka GM #6470110. However, it did continue to be available through AC Delco until the late 1980"s. Nevertheless, it's been gone for over 40 years which is a lot of time for any AC dealer inventory to dry up. Even the replacement 40709 can be difficult to find in NOS form. That's because the 40709 is also applicable to 1970-72 Corvette with LT-1.

          Another factor is that the AC Division of General Motors ceased all manufacture of mechanical-type fuel pumps in the late 1980's or early 1990"s. So, no AC branded (i.e. with AC logo) were manufactured after that time.

          The AC 40709 can be used to SERVICE 1968-69 Corvette small block applications. After all, if it could not GM would not have superceded the 40658 with the 40709. However, there are differences. For one thing the 40658 is a short inlet chamber pump while the 40709 is a long inlet chamber pump. In addition, the angularity of the inlet nipple is considerably different between the 2 pumps.

          I am posting photos of NOS examples [none for sale]of both pumps below;

            Joe,

            Thank you. As always, great background information and insights. Much appreciated. I'll keep trying but a tough search for sure.
