1963 Top Ignition Shield Ground to 340HP Air Cleaner

The judging manual says the clip (with alligator teeth) is bent forward to contact either the bottom of the air cleaner base or rear of FI plenum. (It also specifies that the rear clip is grounded to the tach cable housing for AM/FM equipped cars - mine is AM). The assembly manual simply states clip should contact the air cleaner.
From the photos, it appears that I will need to bend the top clip inward to contact one of the "posts" of the air cleaner which does not seem to be a very secure contact point. Am I missing something or am I being too cautious? I have the shielding moved forward as much as possible. VIN is 11,0XX, right at the changeover to the second clip design.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Fred

    Fred,

FYI, Both the Air Cleaner and Ignition Shield top are judged OFF the car.

Thanks for your response Joseph. I failed to explain the additional concern of the post in that (as I understand it) the connection of the clip to the air cleaner is supposed to act as a ground to reduce AM radio static.

Thanks and see you in Frisco next month.

      Fred

I would think that the misalignment is caused by your brackets for the Shielding not being positioned properly. If you try to loosen them and slide the whole assembly forward the last 3/8" you may have the issue solved.

Yep - thought about that - will investigate further but will probably have to bend the upper portion of the brackets as there is not enough clearance of the vertical shielding to the valve cover to move the brackets forward. Also have to be careful about contact the positive terminal on the coil or chafing the pink wires going to the firewall.

          Thanks,
          Fred
As a side note, again this year other obligations have restricted time needed to prepare the car. I am going to register anyway, given that we have a low count this year. I know that it will not score as high as I would like but want to support the Texas Chapter and those that make the event possible.

Fred, The Texas Chapter & myself are happy to see your car registered. There are many members who "work their way up" to the score they desire. I don't think several judgings are a bad thing for a car or an owner. Why not have 10 of the best judges in the Country look at your car and assist you with your restoration project. I think if more people did that they would have a better understanding of the process as they go through it.

Thanks for bringing it out! Joe

Absolutely. I judged when I was in KC and while I am very familiar with my car after having owned it since 1970 but there is always something new to learn from others with more experience.

              Thanks,
              Fred
