How to connect the neg cable to a battery shut off switch

I understand the NCRS awards a few points if you have a battery cut-off switch on your battery. What negative cable is used in this case? A "correct" cable, cost about $85 + shipping and it has a spring ring that connects to the neg. battery terminal. But the spring can't be connected to the shut off switch. Do you replace the spring ring with a loop or use an incorrect cable to connect to the shut off switch? Is there a point deduct for an incorrect cable or a modified correct cable? What is the NCRS preferred solution to this problem?

    Ed,

There are guillotine-type and knob-type cut off switches that will accept the original style cable with no modifications.

What type of switch are you trying to use?

AH! that explains it - I have always used the "knob" design. Never had a problem with them. I see how the flip switch design would work - perhaps better. Thanks Gary.

Will a guillotine type switch fit inside the C3 battery compartment? I have always used a green knob but would like to switch to a better/more reliable lever switch on my 69.

Yes it will Jaff, with one proviso. If your 1969 has top terminals or rear facing side terminals, no problem. I have had one on my 1970 for decades. I did have to disassemble the lever and reorient the terminals. Not a big deal. I did that to ensure that the lever was hinged from the cable side so that the lever itself was de-energized when open.

If your 1969 has the side terminals facing the front of the car it will be more problematic. I am not sure about that configuration, as I have no experience with it. I just don't know if the clearances would allow the lever type switch.

Do not be regimented to using only the negative terminal. Either positive or negative terminal will electrically work just as well. We were taught to disconnect the negative terminal first in order to provide clearance to the hand tools used in the process and it is not applicable to simply opening a circuit with a properly installed cut-off switch. One should pay attention to the clearances between terminals on the battery none the less.

I feel this is the correct way for a mid-year without a/c.
