Very nice, thanks Jack! And with all that, I still wonder why the paint job on my '78 SA is so splotchy and poor......

Before I took delivery of a new '79, the dealership repainted the entire car (base/clear... came out MINT).
Recently discovered this 1978-79 dated notice:

          Hey Jack,

interesting...particularly the time period Chevy put this out...

When I started at Ford (1977) I worked smack dab in the middle of the Rouge complex across from the ore boat slip. One of the many operations there was the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) which emitted a material called KISH - (excess carbon precipitates out which forms crystalline graphite flakes). Unfortunately, these flakes would deposit on the class A surfaces of your car (hood, roof, trunk ) and could cause chemical and physical damage to the paint if not regularly removed (hosed off). So, depending upon where you lived or worked, this was a legitimate phenomenon back then...

I remember wondering why lots of employee cars were "beaters" ...mine was about 4 years old...not a beater, yet, but it got hosed off more than any other car I have ever owned...
          thx,
          Mark

From what I understand (and remember), acid rain had a real effect on automotive paints. It's one of the reasons 2-stage paints were developed.

Acid rain and other airborne pollutants may damage paint but are not the cause of thin spots, dry spots, excessive orange peel, overspray and sags/runs often seen in this era.

                Hi Owen,

And yes, those of us who live in the mid-to-east coast regions get the most of everything - not just sulfates
prevailing winds blow from west to east...
