My 96 LT1 automatic runs 180-190 and goes up to 205 in traffic and settles back to 180-190 quickly. Of course I'm from the Northeast and not the Southwest. My drive down to the Hampton Roads convention never saw temperatures climb above that. If you look around, you'll see a lot of these cars with 150-200,000+ miles on them. The drivetrain is rock solid on these cars. Lower quality interior components are a nuisance on these cars, but do little to detract from reliability.

I remain convinced that a late C4 is right for me, especially after learning of its basic sound mechanicals as well as its mix of Achilles heels--fixable as they all seem according to your testimony. So, I continue to look for a suitable car in and near my Colorado residence, though I'm prepared to travel with a trailer throughout the Rocky Mountain region should one pop up within a day's drive from the Denver metro area.
Thank you all of you who've been generous with your advice and tales of ownership experience.
