    Jeffrey,

Yes, it is possible. It’s not really a DIY job. For ignition locks, I recommend you contact Steve Walker in New Mexico: 505-573-6363.

      Hi Gary,

Thanks! I was just wondering if it is possible.

The reason for this is that I have a very early 72 model (August 71) and I have a C-keyway key with an N code for the ignition and doors and a D-keyway key with an S code for the accessories. So far, so good for a 1972 model, and everything looks very original and works perfectly.

Now, after removing the accessory cylinder from the lockable compartment, the S-code came to light. I was a little confused about the ignition lock cylinder, because after removing it, an A-code stamp for 1971 appeared on the cylinder, but it contains an 1972 N-code inside.

        Jeffrey,

You say “an A-code stamp for 1971 appeared on the cylinder, but it contains an 1972 N-code inside.” Can you post some photos of those stampings?

Will your storage compartment key fully insert into the ignition core?

          Hi Gary,

          Here a picture:

The compartment key didn‘t go in. However, this should be clear, as the keyway is not the same.

Could it be that an A code is identical in cut to an N code?

            What I know:

            Ignition + Door
            1971: 0A00 - 9A99/0B00 - 9B99 (A-Keyway)
            1972: 00N0 - 99N9/00P0 - 99P9 (C-Keyway)

            Accessory / compartment

            1971: 0C00 - 9C99 / 0D00 - 9D99 (B-Keyway)
            1972: 00S0 - 99S9/ 00U0- 99U9 (D-Keyway)

I was by the locksmith and we read the Key more then one out. Also the cut from the A Code was in in the database not idnetical to the N code.

              Jeffrey,

The 02A3 code corresponds to a C keyway code. The sequence nnAn is unique to 1976, but the exact same key cuts for 02A3 were used in other years. My guess is the outer barrel around your ignition core with that 02A3 stamping was taken from another car. That is to say, someone has messed with your ignition lock previously for some reason.

I asked about whether your storage compartment key would insert into your ignition core only to confirm whether your ignition core has a restricted keyway vs a universal keyway.

                Hi Gary,

Do you know the key cuts for 02A3? Please send me a PM.
I want to compare it with the database from my locksmith. He has a modern digital universal database and I‘m not sure if this is error free. The cuts for the N-Code and S-Code works and looked very identical to my old keys.

I think your conclusion is very realistic, as replacement parts were also found in the steering column. I corrected everything while rebuild.

I don‘t know that there was a universal keyway.

                Thanks
                Jeff
