    71 voltage at coil

I am having an issue suddenly where the starter won't engage. Was working and then just quit. I have checked the starter and it is all good. With the starter out and power to the vehicle when I turn the ignition switch to the start position I get no power at the S wire that should go to the starter solenoid. in the on position the resistance wire I,m getting 12 volts. I read that it should be more like 5-7 volts. I am thinking the ignition switch is the problem.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Sheldon, do you have a manual or auto transmission?

      Sheldon,

When checking the S purple wire for voltage, make sure the ignition switch is in Start position and the clutch is depressed (manual) or the auto transmission is in P or N. If no go, the most common failure points are the clutch or neutral safety switch, their connectors, bulkhead connection (corrosion). Clutch safety switches sometimes get out of adjustment. If the purple/white wire from the ignition switch to safety switch has power in this mode then the ignition switch is working.

For the resistance wire to the + coil, are you checking voltage at the white wire with red/blue dashes? It should be 7-9v because it's a resistance wire. If this wire (from the harness bulkhead connector to the + coil) is a different color and/or shows 12v with the ignition on (not start) then it was replaced with regular wire (not good- this will overload the coil). This does not indicate ignition switch failure.
