I'm the original owner of a 69 with factory PS. Over a LONG period of time I've replaced most rear and front suspension parts (some new, some reman). Reman steering gear box, PS pump, control valve and cylinder. New hoses, rag joint, tie rod ends, ball joints and spindle bearings. Properly aligned new hoses (crisscrossed). Bled with new AC Delco fluid.
I left the ram disconnected from the frame bracket for initial engine startup. Wheels off the ground. Ram didn't move. Connected the ram to the frame. With wheels still off the ground and engine running steering left seems OK (maybe a little stiff). Steering right very stiff. I thought maybe the control valve needed some adjustment. Required more than a full rotation of the adjustment nut to get the ram to move. Around a full reverse rotation to get the ram to reverse. Everything I've read about adjusting the valve indicates only fractional turns of the nut will change direction of movement. Do I have a defective valve? And/or another issue?
FYI - With the tie rod ends off the spindles the steering wheel turns freely in both directions. Seems to eliminate a gear box issue?
Same stiff steering to the right when driving. Steering will "self center" after a turn. Little or no drift in either direction when driving straight. Not aligned yet.
