    STP Oil Filter S200PL

Tried using Archives but didn’t open so I’ll have to ask here.

STP Oil Filter S200PL for 61 (original canister type) is made in China and is too wide. Oil is blocked from completing circuit back into the engine.
Bought a Fram CH200PL and compared them. The Fram is narrower and allows the oil to circulate.
Typical 2025 import junk. Beware. What’s next?

    Mike,

If the STP filter doesn’t work properly, who’s to blame? An unknown manufacturer in China, or STP, who must not have provided the correct design specs to the Chinese company or STP didn’t do due diligence in their QC inspection of the filters provided to them. IMO, this is an STP problem all the way.

And do you know where the Fram CH200PL filter is made?

Other brands numbers for the canister filter are: Purolator L-30141 & Wix 51143.

Are any oil filters made in the USA?

Just checked the internet…some filters are still made in USA but may contain foreign country components. Many previously USA only manufacturers are outsourcing to foreign vendors. Purolator, Wix and K&N are three that still have some manufacturing facilities in the USA.

99.9% of what you purchase at a local big box retailer will be junk. Unfortunately Fram has gone out to pasture too.

Try WIX or Baldwin. WIX is rumored to be hit or miss now? (aka succumbed to offshore madness).
Look for a hydraulic, engine oil/oil filter/air filter fleet type supplier in your area.

I try my absolute best to avoid anything chineasium, except beef with broccoli, side of wanton soup.

This is the place I deal with(below link).
3rd generation business. I'm pretty sure they'll ship anywhere. Buy a case.

Baldwin is vertically integrated meaning they own most if not all the raw material and assembly. Which means they can control the quality. Ask for USA made, don't just assume. (I ask this of every supplier and most have a selection of other countries of origin to choose from).

I bought a STP S200PL from AutoZone last week. The O ring gasket was too thick and wouldn’t fit into the housing without wrinkling up. Took it back to AutoZone and the salesperson disappeared and returned with a box that looked like it had been around for several years. The gasket was the correct size and the filter element was stamped USA. STP must have changed manufacturer.

Baldwin is not just a "brand" like "AC Delco" or "STP" that contacts out the manufacture of products to a third party, usually to the lowest bidder you never heard of with a plant somewhere east of Timbukto.

Baldwin also manufactures products for other "brands" that don't manufacture their own products. I believe they manufacture some products in Mexico, but it's their plant, not some third party, so the manufacturing standards are the same as their USA products.
