    Air filter for fuel injection

I can't find a filter for my 63. What are others doing for a replacement filter?

Bob, I use a FVP P 6418 which will need a spacer to hold it all the way forward in the housing. I used a piece of heater hose to take up the gap. Air flow is much better than the old foam ones and it won't crumble either.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

This filter has several dozen applications - motorhomes, Ford pickup trucks including MD and HD, Mustang..., so it should be around for awhile and is likely relatively low restriction like no more than a few inches H20 at the maximum air flow demand of a 327 FI engine.

Here's an interesting story about a "rare" filter, the fuel filter for the Cosworth Vega. It's almost the size of an oil filter and has an internal bypass valve. I couldn't believe that such filter would be scratch designed and manufactured for such a low volume application (3508 jobs built for the '75 and '76 model years), and research in some OLD parts books showed that it was originally designed as the transmission filter for the GM 6-71 diesel powered "old look" city transit bus two speed torque converter transmission that I rode on in the 1950s as a kid in Seattle. Maybe some of you did too.

I had a real loose converter and from a standstill the engine would almost immediately hit the 1800 RPM governor and the bus would accelerate. At about 25 MPH the driver would lift off the throttle, you'd hear/feel a "clunk" and it would drop in to second, and it felt like the converter locked up. Max speed at 1800 was about 45-50 MPH.

Bendix was the supplier of the Cosworth Vega's EFI system including this filter, and I managed to get a hold of the right Bendix people and found they had enough parts left over to build about 50 of them. This was in the late 90s, and it was discontinued from GMPD. Bendix agreed to build 50 or how ever many they had parts for at a decent unit price, so I organized a parts program through the Cosworth Vega Owners' Association. Members prepaid through the club for however many they wanted, and when it sold out the club sent a check to Bendix and everyone got their filters. I bought three, and the club bought a few for later sale to members who needed one.

I could be that the '63-'65 FI filter existed when Chevrolet chose it or maybe it was actually a new design that was picked up by other manufacturers.

          P. S. So which NAPA filter is the best fit? 6416 or 6418?
