    C2 GM service part frame

I was told my 65 frame was replaced with GM service part. The number stamped does not indicate a year but it looks like a vin number that doesn't match the car. Any thoughts why GM would have any number on a over the counter part?

My first guess is that this is a doner frame from 1971 VIN 17236.

Who believed it was a Service Frame, no names, Judge, friend , etc.

        Tom,

Where is the stamp located on the frame? I can't speak to someone saying it is an over the counter service part but the format of the stamp matches the format of either a 63 or 64 frame with the serial number 17236. The parking brake assembly among other details would determine if it's a 63 or 64.

The S for St. Louis, The 1 for 1971, then the VIN derivative. An 81 would be different as I recall.

I believe 1971 frame stamps begin with the numeric '1' stamp where as the 63 and 64 frame stamps begins with 'S1'.

I found this today from a 71. The 7 in front of the S is the ??

Tom, is there a 7 hidden by paint on your frame??

I think you’ll find this is the way to decode a ‘65 Corvette VIN.

                IMG_8136.jpg

There should be the last digit of the model year preceding the S. I don’t know why that digit is missing from Tom’s example.

Harry’s photo would appear to me to be of a ‘67 frame.

Tom, Can we see more photos of your frame to determine what it came off. Top of front cross member. Transmission cross member. Rear crossmember behind seats. Area where the rear control arms bumpers are mounted. This will help with identifying what you have. YES, the stamp appears to be a 63 or 64 frame serial number stamp.

                    Regards,

                      Gary,

The frame VIN stamps starting with the model year prefix didn't start until 1965 so that's why the 63's and 64's don't have it.

So, is the assumption then that the frame under Tom's car is from a '64? Being as VIN C1 59 Kilometer speedometer ('63 Coupe) is accounted for.

I'll put it up on the lift and take some. The 63/64 idea sounds most likely
