    3896929 cam for 62 327/300

Rebuilding original 62 327/300 engine. Looking for nos Gm cam 3896929, been calling local chev dealers with no success. See different cam companies sell a like cam, question accuracy of their marketing specs.

Loved the way the original engine idled and ran, and want as close a replacement as possible.

Any suggestions as to cam manufacturer who produce the most true to original spec cam or stash of cams that were pulled by the dealers and sold for 10 bucks a piece way back when?

    Thanks,
    Joe

Mr. Mish, Call Elgin Industries at 800-323-6764. They should be able to grind a cam for you or have a kit that is the same as the stock one. I used one from them on my 62 340. The man that I talked to was Scott Stier in sales.

There are a couple of options for this cam. GM 14060651 is one of them. The other is Sealed Power CS-274. You may need to find an equivalent that has similar lift and duration due to availability.

Original GM and Sealed Power cams are virtually impossible to find nowadays, but do a Web search. Elgin and Howard's Cams have ...929 lobe masters and can produce an accurate clone. The basic specs are 194/202/108/116/112/.2600/.2733.

BTW, the original cam in your '62 is not the ...929, but the ...929, which was released for '67 is a refined version of the original used in hydraulic lifter Corvette small blocks (except L-79) from '57 to '66, and is the OE replacement for the earlier cams

If you want to maintain the smooth 500 @ 18" idle behavior and OE appearance, enjoy even more low end torque (like 90 percent of peak at 1200) along with L-79 like top end power and revs, consider the "Special 300 Horsepower configuration" with the McCagh Special camshaft (that Elgin and Howard's can produce, too). The requirement along with the cam is "head massaging" to yield about 220/170 CFM at 28" H2O depression, 0.4" lobe lift.

Details are in the "Tale of Two Camshafts" article that you can find in the "Restoration Documents" thread near the end of the "sticky" section.

Here's a thread with the most recent chassis dyno test of this configuartion:

This thread has the Special 300 HP Technical Support paper attached. Even it you don't go with the Special 300 HP configuation, this paper will educate you on the weak points of the early 327s (like the connecting rods) and other considerations to get the highest quality and most reliable rebuild.

If you want to pursue the Special 300 HP configuration, contact me by phone.

The GM #3896929 camshaft was discontinued by GM in January, 1983 and replaced by GM #14060651. The latter was discontinued in April, 1988 and replaced by GM #14088839. At some later time, the 14088839 was discontinued and the 14060651 "came back" but It is now discontinued without supercession.

The fact that the 3896929 was discontinued 42 years ago provides a lot of time for any dealer stock to "dry up" so it's not surprising that you've had difficulty locating an NOS example.
