    AI to help source parts

I have been experimenting with using AI to identify and source parts. Hit or miss at this stage of the game.

Using chat GPT, I began by asking if it has access to the 1968 Corvette Assembly Instruction Manual. Which it confirmed it does. My first step was simple part searches.

QUESTION 1: When I asked to identify and find a supplier for screw PN 9420825, it did so correctly Example:image.png
QUESTION 2: I asked if it could show a video for how this screw is installed and provided me with the following:

    QUESTION 3:
I then asked where else it was used on the car and gave me this:

    QUESTION 4:
The bad: Some parts, like the gas tank asm PN 3923687, it tells me it is an exhaust manifold. Example:
    image.png
Knowing this was not correct, i asked the following:

There is more to explore with this. Wondering if anyone else is using AI this way? This might be a good tool for NCRS data

    Very interesting, thanks for posting.

I've pretty much ignored this AI stuff given reported quality problems with AI summaries of news reports (Apple in particular).

Given it's "early days" with these type applications, you examples show good utility right now. Seems like questions of fact fare better than questions concerning human behavior.

At least, now I'll have to give this "Chat" stuff a try.

      Patrick,

FWIW, AI is simply just a super search engine.

Would only use Microsoft's Co Pilot or Chat CPT - DO NOT EVER use Deep Seek!

        Patrick and Gary,

For most searches I do - i do them in Google.
AI results are usually the 1st ones shown at the top.

I'm designing a deck for our home and asked the following question:
How much concrete do i need for a 12" diameter 36" deep Sonotube ?
it calculated the cubic feet correctly (~ 2.36 ft3.); and then also correctly said to divide by 27 if you wanted cubic yards.
The number it produced was 0.87 yds3.
I looked at that number and thought...Wow that's a LOT of concrete...
So, I did all the math myself and the correct conversion yields 0.087 yds3. (10x less than what it said).

This morning as I just ran the question by AI again for this post...it does the calculations correctly, but then at the end says this:
Therefore, you will need approximately 3.1 cubic yards of concrete for a 12" diameter, 36" deep Sonotube.
Note: Some sources may provide slightly different values due to rounding, but 3.1 cubic yards is a reasonable estimate.

Far worse than the 1st time I did it.
I'm impressed with what you saw...(looks like only one error)...but the lesson I have learned is "Trust but verify"
        thx,
        Mark

This math was done was by a public school AI. Math done by private & home school AI most likely is accurate....😀😀

As Gary noted, the Super Search Engine aspect of AI looks worthwhile.
