    Chassis Grease Dis-Continued

To my dismay I just found out that the AC Delco chassis grease (10-4060 / #12377985) has been discontinued and no longer available. Apparently no replacement is available from AC Delco or GM.
Would anyone have a recommendation to use and also be compatible with #12377985?

Ray:Go to your Chevy dealer and ask the parts guy to check
With other dealers to see if the got any old stock of these.
I did this and got 2 tubes of them for $30. Larry

        Ray,
How is this grease any different/better/worse than any from the local parts store? May be an ignorant question but I'm always trying to learn.

Every grease has a spec associated with it. Grease #12377985 has a spec. If you can find the spec then you find a grease that matches the spec and you have found your grease. Grease is not grease: all greases have a spec and a specific use. Chassis grease is not bearing grease, and is not brake grease even though they all feel slippery. Same with gear oils they are not all the same check the spec and use the correct oil that meets the spec, it is a lot more than just viscosity.

Do a search on this board for #12377985. This has come up many times. It was
considered a "Corvette Grease". It has high temp specs.. Used with C2 Big Blocks
that the exhaust manifolds came close to the manual steering boxes. BTW GM/Chevy
have a parts search for other dealers that have a particular part number. I forget
what this GM program is called but it will search the whole U.S. for that part number.
This is how I found my 2 tubes for $30. If the parts guy is rather new he probably
does not even know that this can be done. JMHO-Larry Picture below>The original
part number was #1052084 that was superseded with #12377985.

                Update:
After looking thru many local GM dealerships and GM part websites, I still haven't been able to locate the GM chassis lubricant, GM #12377985). Most if not all indicate that it's been dis-continued or on "back order." I guess I just don't understand why GM would discontinue a product that's been of high quality for many years, being used on our classics and on the newer generations of Corvettes . . . . . .

In my search for an alternative, I did find that the Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease has a "few" high-performance, all-purpose automotive grease(s) that meet the GM #12377985 requirements (NLGI Grade 2, Category LB or GC-LB). I just have to have a better understanding of the grade variants and categories differences before I decide . . . .

FYI, the red Mobil 1 grease tends to "leak" out red liquid with time. I stopped using it as a result.

I’ll give another thumbs down to the red Mobil 1. Just like Patrick said, I have a thin red liquid leaking out of suspension parts I used it on. I threw away most of a new tube since I vowed never to use it again.

I second Patrick's and Gary's comments. Some dripped off the mat onto the bare garage floor--- :-(

Question, is the 12377985 a product that was used in steering boxes? Unfortunately, last summer it got rather hot in NH and I had a 63 on the lift and one under the lift. The 63 on the top leaked from the steering box, the lacquer painted 63 under the lift was damaged by the drops of grease, my bad. It was last painted in 1979.

Anyway, what would be a great lubricant for the steering box regardless of heat, so as not to leak??

                            Thanks

The original 1963-82 Corvette steering box lubricant was GM #1052084 and was once available in SERVICE. It was discontinued in May, 1997 and replaced by GM #12377985.

The original Corvette chassis lubricant which was also once specified for Corvette rear wheel bearings was GM #1052597. It was discontinued in July, 1996 and also replaced by GM #12377985.
