Engine matches 66 vin on the car, transmission does not. Still working on reading vin on frame.

Does the engine pad stamping appear legitimate? Even if it does, an engine could have been transferred from a wrecked 1966 to a stolen 1965. All sorts of things happened during the "old days".

What does a plant manager do with leftover parts not used in the new model year? Sending them to service parts is one way, but if service parts doesn't want them - like they already have enough of a low volume part - what's left? A final disposition can be to scrap them, but that can be a black mark on the plant manager for ordering too many parts. ...Duke
My car is an example of one that was ordered with '67 redstripe tires.
Apparently they were not available (hadn't been ordered and/or if ordered, hadn't been stocked where they needed to be) about two weeks before the end of production (June 28, 1967).
White side walls were substituted and noted and signed off as a revision (RN 1583) as shown below
