I have an empty 1970 differential carrier which I gave out for laser cleaning. In the process the side bearing caps were removed and I no longer know which was on the ring gear side and which was on the other side. The caps appear to be stamped "GM 8703 313 N" and "GM 8703 294 N", respectively (prior to the cleaning, I did not even realize that these stampings existed). I am hoping that these stampings distinguish one side from the other. Any knowledge that could be shared would be gratefully appreciated. Unfortunately, the side bearing caps appear to be grouped with the carrier in the GM Parts and Illustration Catalogue, so that lead me nowhere. Thank you!

The caps were never available separately in SERVICE; they were supplied only as part of the case assembly. I believe that's because they were each specifically machined for their factory installed position. In fact, GM SERVICE information instructs that before disassembly, the caps should be marked so that they can be re-installed in their original position. I do not think that the casting numbers embossed on the caps in any way denotes their original position but I'm not 100% certain of that.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

Your best bet is to use blue layout dye and look for uniform witness marks.
Clean the races & caps with brake cleaner. Make sure the bearings are well seated with wood & hammer or dead blow...gently.
Spray the cap saddles and flat ends, let it dry. Put the cap up to the race as if you were going to install them. Rock them around. Then look for the best consistent witness marks. You are looking for uniform removal of the blue dye.
You will likely need to clean and reapply the dye several times to find the best or most favorable position.
This is about the only shot you have at getting them in the right position.

In case you weren't aware, the reply on CF came from the top differential builder who has done hundreds (thousands?) of rebuilds. I believe I read that he's worked on such things as the original Grand Sport diffs.
