    Virtual schools

How much interest is in virtual schools if no judging points can be awarded? I would be willing to do more schools if enough people think the information is more important than a judging point.

    Mike,

I’m more interested in knowledge than in judging points. And there’s no way I could acquire all the knowledge from one of your V-schools on my own.

I also care about knowledge and care nothing about points. I just wish I knew how to be aware when virtual events are happening.

Mike, the knowledge from your schools is valuable whether used as knowledge for judging or not. I do think even the minimal one point attracts some participants and is a benefit for all participants.

Mike. Thanks for all the work that you have done on the previous virtual schools and I have enjoyed them all. I am more interested in the knowledge than the points and would attend any more schools that are posted.

I would be interested just from a learning perspective.

Have these virtual schools been recorded? I try and learn something new every day.

I always thought giving points was one way for NCRS to award a member for trying to improve their knowledge. How are we supposed to promote new judges for the future without awarding points.

I enjoy the information and will continue to listen to the excellent presentations. Thanks for your efforts as education is the most important part and should be the mission of this organization.

Positives as you noted, schools develop new judges and let them build judging points.

Negatives - Schools building judging points. Schools have always been adjunct to hands on judging. Observer Judge was, from the start, always the way judges were meant to be trained. Schools came later, and later still, points for schools.

I've met some 200 level Master Judges that have never judged a car. Never OJ'd on a car. ALL THEIR POINTS HAVE BEEN FROM SCHOOLS.

Don't know but suspect, Mike Treece perhaps has got some NJC/Team Lead/NCRS Board feedback on quantity of schools being offered. And that drove Mike's initial "no judging points" question.

Me personally, I agree it's better that our judges gain experience by hands on judging. No doubt, our judging schools are a great way to learn, and a great way to save money while learning.

Seems to me schools have somewhat become a points "filler" given lack of judging opportunities for judges at some events. Lots of new folks that want to judge, and lots of senior judges taking spots. Flight Judging is for the benefit of the owner. Team leaders have a requirement to fill their teams with best available judges - owner's benefit. Quandary - quality vs opportunity.

My take is we ought to have a robust "Mentor Judge" program. Mentors being senior judges helping new judges. This would free up judging spots for new judges while maintaining quality for our owners. Downside it may look to owners as an unfair "three judges on my car".

                            Dave

                            Some background:

Dennis Clark, then National Judging Chairman, announced in Fall 1989 Restorer a Judging Recognition Award program. Purpose was to give "a little more credit" to those folks who help make the judging portion of NCTS work. Also program was to help identify our most experienced judges when putting together teams.

Winter 1990 Restorer specified our (unchanged to today) judging point awards - National 5 per day, Regional 3 per day, Chapter 2. (With Observer Judges 3 National, 2 Regional, and 1 Chapter)

Dennis Clark, in 1990 at suggestion of then President Mike McCagh, added an aditional point (1) for members participating in NCRS Judging School. "... hopefully will act as a catalyst for additional judging schools and training by our chapters." Roy Sinor, then NCRS National Judging Chairman, in 2005 layed out our current judging point recognition scale. In particular, at National Max 15 points with Max 10 for judging OR Max 10 for schools. Want to earn 15 points?, then you have to attend schools and you have to judge.

All this effort over time was to develop judges experience by actually judging and by learning in schools.

Along comes Covid. Now we get an expansion of on-line schools and as you noted a way to promote new judges for our future. Some positives and negatives with on-line schools.

Your classes have been extremely helpful to me. I do appreciate receiving the one point, but I'll attend your classes even absent that.
