    Tachometer Cable - 1964 Corvette

Is it necessary to lube the tachometer cable? If so, what is best lube to use?

Also, noticed the end that attaches to RPM gauge (on the new cable; top in image below) has a different "stop nut" (hex nut, square edges) than the original.

Installed new cable and a resulting "chatter" was noticeable. Reinstalled old cable and no chatter... however and unfortunately the old cable unraveled at distributor end.

I believe the "stop nut" / square edges on new cable is the result of the chattering as it spins inside the metal cowling .... Any feedback is appreciated.

    George,
The tach cable can be lubed. I've lubed Kable-ease cable lubricant with good luck. If you need to source a new cable and want to be sure it's functionally and visibly correct...order from Speedometer Cable USA. https://speedometercablesusa.com/

George, The cable you show in the photo is not an original cable. It is a fabricated cable with that repair end crimped onto a universal cable that was cut to length. If you want to duplicate that Dorman products sells the repair cable insert at a reasonable price. Otherwise, you'll need to measure that old cable and order a replacement from a cable vendor.

      Good luck.

Try Joe's solution first. Easy to do and price is good. I built one for my 63 about 12 years ago, still going strong.

I use the Kable Ease on my 1964 and 1965 Corvettes and it works great. I do think that I need to replace the cable in my '64 as it has some needle flutter at idle which I think is from the cable being original and the ends have become not square.

          George,

If you need some of the Kable-Ease lube, I have a few extra tubes that I purchased on Amazon a while back and did bought the multiple packages instead of the single package. Send me a private message with your address and I'll give you a tube of it if you cover the shipping.

After further research and conversation's, I took Leif's recommendation and contacted Speedometercablesusa. Spoke directly with John and shared images of the old cables and he recognized right away that both cables were not correct. I ordered the correct cable, it arrived in 3 days, installed it and no chattering, no noise, RPM gauge operating perfectly with no needle flutter.

Here is an image of the new cable, pre lubed...

            Thanks Leif for the recommendation!
