    1970 LT-1 engine stamping

    LT1 Engine Pad.jpg
I'm trying to determine if the motor in the LT-1 I'm looking to buy is correct / original.

The car seems mostly original with correct part #'s, castings, dates, etc. However, I struggle with the engine pad stamping (see pic attached). I don't have any direct experience with early LT-1's so I'm hoping some of you do.

There is NO documentation even though the owner replaced the gas tank.

I am unsure about the positions / locations of the stamps on the pad (the ones i have seen have the date closer to the end of the pad on the inboard side).

There seems to be a lack of broach marks.

The " 1 " in the date seems odd and inconsistent with other motors I have observed. (again, i have not seen many early LT-1's)

The depth of the VIN # seems very deep.

Have I answered my own question here or does someone have some words of wisdom to help me otherwise say that this is a real LT-1?

Thanks for any help on this.

I see good broach makes outboard of the machine assembly data. mike

Mine is a mid March car and has the date stamp starting closer to the bottom edge, leaving a 1-1/2" space in the middle like Kieth's.
My vin stamp is also deeper. Broach marks are faint at best. Always has passed judging.

Agree, marks seem clear to me.

The VIN stamping font size looks too small to me.

Mark— The vin stamping on Kieth’s engine is original. The vin characters have a 50% aspect ratio. The engine on the car you are looking at has characters with a wider 60% aspect ratio. They are not St. Louis factory characters.

Thanks guys! This was really helpful. The comments regarding the font and aspect ratio of the VIN (and i really looked closely at zoomed in pictures side by side) plus the positioning so close to the date make me believe that this is a re-stamp.

                I really appreciate everyone's input.
