    1956 with VE serial number

I recently acquired paperwork for a 1956 serial number VE56S001279. I have the original invoice plus a few for documents. On the invoice the serial number is listed as E56S001279. On the certificate of ownership from the State of New Jersey lists serial number as VE56S001279. I read that all 55 with a V8 had the VE designation. Just wondering if any one has any info on this or if any one else has a 56 with the VE designation.

If owner of this car wants the paper work I am willing to part with it. The car was purchased May 26. 1956 from Riker Chevrolet in Burlington NJ. Options included heater, radio, WSW Tires, tutone, Power glide, Parking brake alarm, courtesy lights, windshield washer, dual 4 barrel and power top. Paint was red with white coves. Have no info on interior color.

My car is 3 numbers off this one and pretty much same options except mine is 3 speed not auto and is cascade green/beige coves

have seen the VE on other 56 and 57 vet titles but the vin plates began with just the E. Probably a typeO at the dealership used to using the VE on shoebox pass cars. mike

Hi Sheldon ; my 56 vin# E56S002291 also has the paperwork ownership as VE56S002291 . As explained by Mike Hunt in his Research Project 56/57, this is generally known as the "E versus VE" phenomenon. The "official" 56/57 vin #'s began with the letter "E" , meaning "Corvette" body style. Chevrolet's alpha designators were : "A" /150 series, "B" / 210 series, "C" / Belair series, "D" / Panel truck, and "E" / Corvette . The V-8 equipped Chevrolet vin #'s began with a "V" prefix because 6 cylinders were also available . This is why the 56/57 Corvette door jam tags and frame stamped vin #'s bore no "V" prefix , but their paperwork often did contain the did contain the "V" prefix. In his research 56/57 project Mike Hunt recorded many 56/57 Corvette's that had the paperwork "VE" in their vin #'s. Hope this info helps. Best regards, Jim
