    Bob,

Trying to visualize which brackets that you're referring to. Are you referring to the two BB ignition shielding side brackets?

I had the same question as Mike...what brackets ?

My ‘67 AIM shows UPC U69 (radio) sheet A9 (L36 & L71) with those support assemblies having part numbers 3886900 and 3869721.

According to John Hinckley (I can’t find his exact reference), but he said somewhere if there’s no part number shown in the AIM for something that is shown in the drawing, it means it arrived at St. Louis already assembled. Examples: no part numbers for engine blocks; cylinder heads; intakes; etc.

So, your brackets were assembled (installed on the engine dress line) at St. Louis – not Tonawanda.
So they would not have been on the engine when it was painted in Tonawanda – no taping or masking necessary.

maybe someone can find that JH reference or statement
      thx,
      Mark

        Great info Mark,

Pretty sure Bob is referring to the shielding side brackets. All big block '65-'66 Vettes came with the LH spark plug wire support #3869721 that I show above. When a radio was ordered the car came with the RH support #3886900 along with the chrome shielding.

My point here is if your car was a L36 then the intake bolts used for these brackets were painted orange (Bob's original question.) And early '66 L36 cars used brackets like the one I show above with the bolt hole through the bracket and not slotted as later brackets were. So then my earlier '66 L36 bracket intake bolts were probably missing more paint since the bolts had to be removed and reinstalled?

        Just a thought,
        Mike

Stated another way, if an individual part is shown and called out with a part number in the AIM, it was installed at St. Louis either in the body shop, the final assembly line, or a sub-line like the engine dress line. An example is carburetors. (The hot test at the engine plant used an adapter to the inlet manifold that fed a combustible mixture of natural gas and air, so no need for a carburetor.)

On the other hand you won't find part numbers for brake drums or disks because they arrived at the plant as complete front knuckle and rear training arms assemblies with all the brake parts installed.

Those are the brackets i am asking about , so i guess the answer is they where installed after and the bolts holding them will have some paint missing if what i am reading is correct
            thank you
