    AT992 solid lifters? Best Brand

Ordering solid lifters for my 327/340hp, I like sealed power but seeing prices from $10 to $20 each? Are they all the same? some made in the USA, or is there a better brand?
I am using an Elgin 900p camshaft

It is best to buy lifters from the cam manufacturer. In fact, most wont warrant the cam unless you do. So what does Elgin say?

Is the camshaft a Duntov clone? What about valve springs? Are you replacing them? If the cam is a Duntov clone DO NOT use more aggressive valve springs than OE.

Beyond that I recommend the LT-1 cam to replace the Duntov... 30-30 too.

The AT992 is an edge orifice-type mechanical lifter, as was the original GM #5231585. Other mechanical lifters on the market, including, POSSIBLY, those marketed by Elgin, may be of a different type. If I were going to use a flat tappet cam in a small block, I would want to use an edge orifice type lifter.

Of course, as I have mentioned many times before, I would not be using a flat tappet type cam and lifters in ANY engine. In this day and age I would use only an hydraulic roller type camshaft and lifters. Period.

My recollection is that the AT992 lifters have been out of production for decades, so it would be interesting to know the source of the AT992 lifters the OP is talking about. There are plenty of fake parts out there on the Web.

As previously stated the AT992 lifter is a clone of the ...585 GM edge orifice type lifter. Oil metering is a function of lifter bore clearance. These were used with C1/2 small block mechanical lifter camshafts and, I think, LT-1, also.

OE mechanical lifters for big blocks are of the "piddle valve" type. These have an inertia valve that meters overhead oiling that provides about 20 percent more flow than the edge orifice type to support additional lubrication and cooling to the more highly loaded big block valve train. The edge orifice lifter is a one piece design. The piddle valve type is multi-piece with a visible snap ring and looks like a hydraulic lifter to casual observation.

The edge orifice type was discontinued long ago by GM and replaced with the piddle valve type for both small and big block service parts. I believe Federal Mogul continued to offer the AT992 edge orifice type longer, but they've been out of production for a long time - like 20 years or more.

The Sealed Power AT992 remains available although I think it might have been discontinued for a short time some years ago.

I do not know what the current manufacturing source is, though.

I should also have mentioned that the GM #5232695 did not actually replace the GM #5231585 at least as far as GM was concerned. It may be, though, that some folks chose to use the 5232695 for small blocks when the stock of the 5231585 dried up.

The GM #5232695 was discontinued without supercession in July, 1999. The GM #5231585 was discontinued without supercession in September, 2000.

The 5231585 was originally used for all 1957 to 1972 Corvettes with mechanical lifter, small block engines.

The GM #5232695 was originally used for all 1965-71 Corvettes with mechanical lifter, big block engines.

Just to clarify, the 5232695 lifter is the "piddle valve type" I referred to in my previous posts that was OE on C2/3 big blocks.

Thanks, Joe for the additional info, and I have to admit than I am not up to speed on the current availability of flat tappet mechanical lifters in the aftermarket, today.

As Joe stated, neither OE type mechanical lifter has been available from GM for a quarter-century!

FWIW, I have been using Howards Cams in my flat tappet solid lifter builds. They have a VERY similar LT-1 grind, with their direct lube lifter. I just bought another one for an upcoming project.

This link is for the cam and lifter set.......

And here is just the lifter.

                Hope that helps,
                Tim
