I cannot find anything about this on any NCRS forum or general internet search but do not want to reinvent the wheel so I'm asking the experts here. Conversions for the mechanical black box VR's are readily available, but are not appropriate for the Transistor VR box (11163688) due to very limited space. Originally, I just wanted to repair my TI VR but could find no one to do it so I went on a search but found no relevant information. In fact there is VERY limited information on the TI VR as a whole and only one page (unhelpful) in the assembly manual. In fact it appears to be not a settled fact if the TI VR was really available from the factory on all the cars it was supposed to be on. I have read a number of original owner cars claiming that they had a mechanical black box from the factory. My car's birthdate was June 2, 1965 and my TI VR is dated May 65, so maybe they were just in constant short supply during the year and when not available the factory just slapped on a black box mechanical one to prevent delays in delivery? I know this is just speculation and would really appreciate any information anyone would have on TI VR's. It's turned into a fascinating subject for me.
Anyway, again I hope I'm not reinventing the wheel and someone has already done this, but I went on a quest to find a way of installing a modern up to date SS board into the small space of a TI VR. After two part's store VR's bought I was able to sandwich with a very clean installation of a modern SS board into a TI VR box with NO external modifications. You cannot tell from the outside that it is not an original unaltered TI box. Like I said, the mechanical black box VR conversions on the market that I know of will not fit and some of the part store replacement VR's have too big a replacement modern board. As everyone knows the main board has to be grounded, but none of the internal components on the board can touch and ground on the TI box so the process is a bit tricky. I've had it now for awhile with no problems and voltage is correct at the battery and alternator. I check voltage every time I start the car just to be sure. If anyone is interested I can tell them how I did it, unless there is a post somewhere where they already did a better conversion than I just did on my own.
PS. ANY information on TI VR's no matter how obscure would be appreciated.
Cheers
