    1964 Tachometer Issue

Cross gear in distributor was stripped (see pictures). Changed out cross gear and replaced cable with new cable.
There is now a noticeable noise coming from the Tachometer gauge, tapping / chattering sound. Any idea what is causing this noise?

Thanks for the input. Cross Gear.jpg Cross Gear 2.jpg

    Hi George,

Could possibly be the replacement cable (inner core too long or too short causing noise at the Tach head).

You might try temporarily reconnecting the old cable to see if the noise goes away.

      George,
If you bought your tach cable from one of the Corvette vendors, there's a good chance that is the issue. The very best cables are made by Speedometer Cables USA (Deluxe Speedometer Service).

Speedometer Cables Service Since 1932! Speedometer Cables USA is a 3rd generation Colorado owned company in Denver, Colorado.

        George,

If you only replaced the cross gear, the most likely issue is that some of the teeth on the distributor main shaft are also stripped and only making partial contact with the cross gear, thereby causing the chattering sound.

It is most likely the core cable is too long putting to much pressure on the rotating assembly in the tach
