Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
The Edlebrock AVS2 is a modernized AFB. New for about $400. No experience with them but they have a good reputation.
Edelbrock’s new AVS2 is a game-changer for those who prefer carburetion over fuel injection for fuel delivery.
Look for details like choke, vacuum, throttle and fuel line set up.
If the old carburetor is original to the car, consider keeping it in a box or even restoring it.Mark Edmondson

Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
It would help if you provide more information. What is the AFB model number? Look for data stamped on the front lower right corner. Is the manifold set up for an AFB or does it require an adapter? OE or aftermarket? Casting number?
Replacing a carburetor with a different type usually involves making changes to throttle linkage, fuel line, and choke system and maybe PCV system.
Why do you think the air horn casting needs to be replaced?
Carburetor rebuilt kits usually included a new accelerator pump.
A photo or two of the current setup will help.

Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
See attached pictures of top of Carburetor and Accelerator Pump. You can not tell in the picture (top of carb), but when the accelerator pump is depressed, it does not go straight up and down. Half way down the pump slides forward. The back side "guides" for the pump is worn.

Working on rebuilding... notice in second picture, the leather is torn on pump, thus not injecting fuel into carb.

Don't believe these "guides" can be rebuilt....hence the need to replace the air horn.- Top

George,
I have a 1965 Corvette AFB, Part # 3720, 327 w/ A/T. Its a rebuildable core. I am not sure if the Air Horn is the same for 64 & 65. If interested send me a PM. I can send photos.

Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
You didn't provide manifold and carb numbers, but it looks like both could be OE. I don't know what you mean by "guides", but based on what you have provided I see no reason why this carb cannot be rebuilt.
The 1963 Corvette Shop Manual and 1964 Supplement have comprehensive information on the AFB. With that information and a common "zip kit" an overhaul should get it back to near new operational condition.

Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
George,
The "S" link that connects to your accelerator pump is in backwards. If you correct this the linkage will push the pump down straight, give it a try. The guides, as you refer to them will wear if the pump does not move in a straight up/down motion.- Top

Re: 1964 C2 Carter AFB Carburetor Replacement
I'm not sure what you mean by "guides."
You don't want to replace the carburetor. You may solve one problem, but you'll create a few more. You may need an adapter to fit the manifold. You will need an adapter in order for your air cleaner to fit. Then, you may not be able to close your hood. You will also need to fabricate a fuel feed line from the fuel pump. The pedal linkage will not be a problem. You will need to add an electric choke, which is not difficult. You could also do without a choke.
All 1962-1965 Corvette AFB air horns will interchange. The 3721 model was the service replacement model for all these years. There's a few junk 3721s on EBay now. There's even a couple of air horns listed.
You can buy accelerator pumps separately. At one time, you could buy accelerator pumps designed for marine use that had neoprene or some kind of plastic instead of the usual leather. The leather dries out when the car is not used regularly. The marine one doesn't.- Top
