66 427 water pump backing plate hardware

All the rebuilt pumps i see have hex head bolts with star lock washers for the backing plate but the judging guide states slotted 1/4 screws. The only slotted screws that vendors list is for a 65 , any info on this would be great

Hi Bob,

Trust the JG on this one. The '66 TIM & JG 6th Edition correctly states big blocks use "slotted pan-head screws with star washers." Years ago I purchased a few restored '66 BB water pumps from Bill Mock. I really enjoyed those conversations with Bill. He correctly used these pan head screws with the star washers.

Here are some very good photos from a friend's original pump off of a December built '66 L36. Its got an early date. August 11th, '65. This pump jives with the one that Joe posted. The photo of the damaged slotted screw shows evidence of the star washer.

The slotted screws and star washers are easy enough to find but the backing plate with the large circular depression is hen's tooth tough to find. Most restorers use a flat plate here instead of salvaging the original back plate.
