It is your car, so it is entirely your choice to do what you want with your car. I have called added side pipes on cars before, and then I talked with the owners during the owner's review. My advice is, "why not return your car to an under-car exhaust and eliminate the big deductions all together"? Some have taken my advice and done just that...others have not.

As I said at the outset, it is your car. It is your decision.

I would very much like to see what Bill Clupper developed as a standard point deduction for a non-factory side pipe car (AO Smith or St Louis car). Hopefully there's more to it than just a number of points Bill proposed for the standard deduction. I hope you're able to find and post what Bill Clupper developed. I believe a methodology could be developed to deal with the side pipe vs under car system differences. Even 'credits' for components still on the car (e.g. under car rear valance) could be factored in though practically speaking, I think few, if any, would leave a under car rear valance on a car they converted to side pipes.

Another argument for a side pipe standard deduction is the encouragement of participation in the hobby. If ever NCRS needed to encourage participation, it's now! Side pipes are a very desired option for many Corvette enthusiasts. I don't know what percentage of Corvettes with side pipes didn't come from the factory with them but I think its consequential. Such owners may feel their cars are looked down on as 'counterfeits' of sorts by NCRS purists and stay away from participation. Covering non-factory side pipes with a standard deduction legitimizes the owners choice and encourages/provides a path for participation.

the path exists right now.. driving bonus points adds back points lost to a modification such as added pipes.. You lose around 100-120 points on pipes, meaning you're starting around 97.5 instead of 100. Still plenty of room for a mostly correct car to score over 95, especially if you add in driving bonus points.. The Blue ribbon is easily attainable.. Mark of Excellence award will not be attainable, but you wouldn't want it to be on a car with a significant modification such as added pipes. Enjoy your car, and the judging experience!
