1972 Carpet around underseat plastic seatbelt cover? How much do I cut?

Ok I'm finally getting around to replace the non-original dark saddle carpet in our 72 base coupe. I have searched the TDB and read the 6th edition of the TIM-JG and I can't tell how I treat the carpet in the seatbelt plastic shield area. I can't use the old carpet because it was not original.

Does anyone have a photo from an original 72 in that area without the seat and the cover removed? I see traces of padding stuck to the belt retractor and it looks like something may have been between the cover and the retractor. (see photos)

From my saved pictures of a 1972 7K mi survivor with original interior. Third picture shows the ripped of piece of the factory paper floor "mat" found when I removed the sill plate.
