I'm doing the same thing on my '65. Does the Rust-Oleum product work if there is residual paint on the frame?

Yesterday I used the Rust-Oleum gel product for the first time while restoring a leaf spring. It seems to work about as well as Evapo-Rust gel but more convenient because of its spray bottle. For this project and while working my frame, I started with a wire brush to knock off loose stuff then followed up with a 40-grit disc on a die-grinder. At this point, the surface is clean and mostly bare metal with some surface rust. This is when the rust removal product is applied. There isn't much paint left so paint stripper isn't necessary.

With that said, the the rust removal products are more effective if there isn't a layer of paint on top.

Update time.

1 - my evaporust/cloth/foil spray method - meh..slight improvement but not all that much. fail.
2 - Rustoleum spray gel - returning it; don't bother; did nothing
3 - Naval Jelly - had some of this sitting around from another hobby. Probably worked best of products I have tried. After applying you should reapply every 30 mins or so...literally rinse and repeat and results pretty good.
4 - Evaporust gel - mine came too firmed up to use like Mark's. not really a gel. Returned on Amazon and they refunded my money and said don't bother sending it back. into the trash it went.
5 - wire wheel and (pick your cleaner/degreaser) - this is a good prep b4 naval jelly...and/or in between treatments. seems to help.

For any other times I need to deal with vertical areas or things I can't soak in Evaporust...I will use the Naval Jelly.

Thanks for the update. Bummer the Rustoleum spray didin't work on you frame... it worked okay on leaf spring leafs (leaves?).

For the first step in removing heavy grease, etc. first quick pass of chassis at the car wash then I used the method we used at the airport where I worked. Mr. Clean non-diluted and a putty knife then cloth if needed. It is messy as it will drip on you but it worked well. I was fortunate and very light to no surface rust so 0000 steel wool then paint or finish as you want. Have done this on three cars. Then last time on a C3 used a power washer for the first step.
