    Terry,
I'm a little slow, but, can you help me understand your comment "the gear shift hit the console opening in reverse and I had to force the shifter to get into reverse. I looked at the shifter mounting assembly and determined I had to move it back a bit and the washer did the job." Wouldn't adding the adding the washers move the shifter rearwards, and, not sideways? Shown below are pictures of my original '71 shifter boot and you can see over the years, I've always had an interference when I put it into reverse . . . . . . . Any thoughts on to move the shifter "to the right" to avoid the interference condition?

In my case the shift lever was hitting the front of the console opening. The driver's side positioning was fine.

Re: 1969 Shifter Bracket Bolts - need some help

        Hello Gary,
Sorry for the delay. I was doing some more research. I was able to locate an unrestored, unmolested 1969 shifter mounting bracket and the two screws which secure the bracket to the backside of the center crossmember. These photos are posted here with the permission of Joe Westbury. The photos do help to clear up some of my confusion regarding plain washer or no plain washer. It also help me clear up that a self-tapping screw was used in this location and is screwed directly into the back side of the center crossmember to help secure the shifter mounting bracket. There are always exceptions to the rule but Joe's car seems to clear things up for me.

Screw is GM PN 9419402 in the 1969 AIM - see my first post
1/2" wrench, indented hex head, self-tapping screw
        5/16" - 18 x 3/4" size
Based on Joe's photo, there was no plain washer under the flanged-head screw in this location

Hope this additional information is helpful - thank you Joe Westbury for the pictures.
Thank you to all of the others who have helped provide information and details.

        Kevin

            Kevin,
Nice clear photos. In your second picture (of the interior of the frame - bolt end), there appears to be a nut either welded to the frame or freely installed after bolt was inserted. Are my eyes playing tricks on me??

              Leif,

If you look at the photo in Kevin’s post #1, you’ll see that feature you’re talking about. It not a nut. It looks like the metal was push thru when the hole was made. Here’s an enlarged view of Kevin’s photo from post #1. That would give the bolt about twice the thickness or more to thread into.

FYI, Gary has a great write-up on transmission and shifter mounting hardware:

I should have searched the archives earlier for GM 9419492. If I had, I would have found this prior posting by Gary Seymour.
