    1966 427/390 distributor shaft

Hello all, so today we pulled my distributor on my 427/390 to clean it up and check the curve. When we started taking it apart, we could not get the shaft out. Looking through the tach drive hole it looked to us like the shaft was a two piece. I have never seen that. Has anyone heard of this? Does anyone have info on disassembling this distributor?

    Thanks
    Mike

You have distributor cam gear (pin) removed?

Photo below is a rebuild kit - no two piece.

Sometimes the roll pin bore can have burrs and make the shaft difficult to pull out, and if you force it you can gouge the housing bushings. If you can feel any burrs dress both sides of the bore ends lightly with some 400 paper and the shaft should come out.

The distributor overhaul procedure is in the '63 Corvette Shop Manual and COMs beginning in 1966. If you don't have one you should not proceed until you do, but remember they don't mention the dimple. You need to know about the dimple or you may never get it put together and installed correctly in the engine.

Dave, thanks for the picture. I do have the pin removed from the cam gear. I can slide the shaft maybe 3/4 of the way out, then it seems to get larger. At first i thought it had the lower bearing stuck on it but that bearing is still there. It is odd. It looks like something is threaded. I will try and get a picture.

        Thanks.

Kinda sounds like the bottom bushing is worn and allows the roll-pin burr to pass while the upper is much less worn and catches it. The bottom being worn more is normal. Run a flat file over the roll pin hole on each side of the shaft. Make sure the shaft at the oil pump coves is also smooth.

Not sure what the previous owner did to this shaft.

Just an off-the-wall distributor question. Distributor date?

Some issues with distributors used on early BBC.

Did car have any oiling issues?

David, the distributor date is December 27, 1965.
I do not know of any oil issues. Not sure how I would find out. Thanks for the link.

It looks like damage from a prior mishap. Maybe a VAC mounting screw......

Or possibly in its past, the Tach driven gear lost a tooth and found it's way down there. Prior may have simply replaced the tach gear and left distributor as is, hoping it'd be ok.

Regardless, new shaft and bushings are in need.

Thanks Rich. I did buy new parts from Zip. Do you think i should drop the oil pan and take a peak?

I'm curious how this could happen. I can see the top wear being where the housing bushing is, but that length of damage I can't wrap my mind around.

Would you post a photo of the shaft with the bottom cam gear next to it with the roll pin holes kinda aligned in both?

Mike, I'd closely inspect the distributor gear for any damage.

I'd also drain the oil into a clean container and fish through it with a magnet for signs of metal shavings. If it's clear, then a new filter and fresh oil.

If particles are found I'd drop the pan for a good cleaning, and run a magnet under the oil pump pickup screen.
