I am looking for information on how to clean the air cleaner element in my air cleaners. It does not look like the element can be removed from the air cleaner housing. The Corvette servicing guide instructions are to wash the element in kerosene or mineral spirits. Are you supposed to submerge the entire air cleaner assembly in the kerosene or mineral spirits? Thanks!

Re: 1957 Carter 2x4 carburetor service
If your air cleaners are the small, single carb units with the shredded AL foil filtration media they're not able to be disassembled so you'll have to clean or submerge them as a unit. I'd suggest maybe turning them on edge and only partially submerging the filter element in cleaning fluid and rotating to access the entire filter while avoiding getting the fibrous pad on the inside of the lid wet as much as possible and thoroughly drying that when done cleaning.- Top

Re: 1957 Carter 2x4 carburetor service
Hi Ronald! I have been cleaning both of my 2X4 air cleaners since 1964 using the following method: 1 fill a container large enogh to fit both air cleaners setting upright as they set on the carbs and fill the container with cleaner up to the level just below the jute type material that is mounted on the underside of the air cleaner. 2. Since mine usually arent too dirty I let them soak for an hour. 3. Remove them and set them on an absorbant and let them drain usually at least 2 hours. 4. Blow them dry with compressed air. Rods method works well also. I found an air filament cleaner years ago that worked well but havent found in some time so I use mineral spirits usually. Good Luck! Steve- Top
