    Paint or dye

    working on a 64 convertible and am wondering about the console, radio side panel and trim panels behind doors. I see dye for interior for sale by vendors but no paint. Will dye work on these fiberglass and metal parts of should I find paint to refinish? the color is Daytona dark blue.

    Howard,

    I used vinyl paint from Corvette America to paint the original dash pads, dash, radio speaker grill, center console, radio side panels, original door panels, and the convertible top frame covers. This was done in 1981 and still looks great.

      Thanks James, your car does look good. Did you use any sort of primer? I'm wondering because my speaker grille is kind of rough and will need sanding to get it smooth and may need some primer to get it smooth enough to paint. Other parts are ok.

        The dye from Corvette America is a lacquer based paint

          Keith;
          I did not know that. That's good to know.

            Howard I don't think it says that anywhere on the label. But it sprays and dries just like lacquer. I have used it from their quart containers to spray from a gun and rattle cans and it always comes out perfect.

              Howard,

              Here is the vinyl paint and vinyl plastic primer that I used. This was bought this in the early 1990's as I needed to do some touch-up. I just Googled Vinyl Industrial Paints, Inc, they are still in business. I used this paint in the spring of 2014 when I repainted my radio side panels. It still sprayed and matched great. The key is to get all the surfaces uber clean, free of all skin oils, etc. Otherwise the vinyl paint will fish eye.

              To answer your question regarding the primer, I would use something compatible with the paint you buy. As Keith said the Corvette America paint is lacquer based.
