    63 & 64 Coil Usage

Please clarify my understanding of ign. coil usage.
    63 - 091 all engines
    64 - 087 all carbed engines
    64 - 091 fuel injected engine
    65 - 202 all

    TI are not included above

My previous thought was the 091 was also used on 365 hp, but the AIM shows 087 for 64. The service manual for 63 & 64 both list only 091 coils.

    Re: 63 & 64 Coil Usage

My understanding for single point system coil and ballast utilization (TI excluded):

1963: Early to about mid production - all engines 091 coil, 0.3 ohm ballast (1931385).
After about mid production - 250/300HP 087 coil 1.8 ohm ballast (1957154); SHP/FI no changes.

1964: same utilization as mid to late'63 production.

1965-1967: All engines, 202 coil 1.8 ohm ballast

There is a TSB on '63 mid-production coil and ballast changes. I'm sure it's posted somewhere here on the TDB, but I don't know how to find it.

Note 1: The 1115202 coil became the service replacement for all 12V coils back to '55 once stocks of previous OE coils were exhausted.

Note 2: The P&A catalogs list the 1931385 ballast as ".03 ohms". This is obviously an error that was never corrected. It should be 0.3 ohm.

Note 3: AFAIK all C1 12V ignition systems use the 0.3 ohm ballast.

Thanks Duke. Very thorough as usual. If I comprehend, the 63 & 64 SHP/FI retained usage of the 091/0.3 system
I was unaware the mid year 63 250/300 change, thinking it a model year change. The AIM threw me. Could not see SHP different from FI.

        Correct.

Regarding the AIM, what we have is the final version. As you likely know, this document was continually updated throughout the model, year and old superseded sheets were trashed. However, each sheet has a change record at the bottom which usually states the old and new part numbers. The date is the date the sheet was changed. The actual running change on the production line may have occurred before or after. There's no way to tell from the available documentation of the production process.

Usually the disposition of superseded part was "use until supply exhausted", so there was often period of time where either part could have been installed depending on how parts were picked from plant inventory.

Some sheet change records may say "redrawn and revised" often because they ran out of change record lines. In this case the record of previous changes is lost, but always look at the change record for the sheet you are researching, which can provide additional valuable information.
