1963 Spare Tire Lid Repair or Leave As Is?

The rear portion of my spare tire lid is in need of repair (photo attached - part of lip missing) but is in good condition otherwise as is the tub. In reviewing the C.D.C.I.F. judging model, my first inclination is to leave as is, but welcome any other thoughts. With 5 points each for Originality and Condition, it may just boil down to cost/benefit threshold. If left unrepaired, I would think it would get hit for Completeness? and then some % hit for Condition (Minor or Moderate?). If repaired (correctly), I would think it would take a hit on Finish with no deductions for condition (would be difficult to replicate the black fiberglass).

    Thanks in Advance,
    Fred

Fred, I believe you would not take a point hit on Originality, Condition, yes.

If you want a winter project, you can probably do the repair yourself. Tedious work but not that difficult. Just need resin and some fiberglass matt and some black resin dye. Lots of sanding.

I did mine over the winter.

I also have a few missing sections on my tub, but I plan to make a circular "mold" of sorts using 3/4 inch plywood cut with a jigsaw to help hold the fiberglass in place. I'll cover the plywood with 3M aluminum foil tape to keep the fiberglass from sticking to it. Colud also probably make a mold using flexible 1 in. x 12 in. plastic strips from the hobby store. Should be able to "color" the resin to match. Probably more tedious than difficult job to do.

Fred, That is damage only, so no originality deduction there. You will just get a condition deduct of 25% to 50% depending on the judges opinion of "easily repaired" or "difficult to repair".

        Regards,

Thanks all. Impressive work Harry - you and Doug are a lot more creative than I. I don't know the first thing about fiberglass repair so will leave that to my body and paint guy. Thank you Joseph for the clarification - will see what it will take in $$ to fix. Given everything else that needs to be done, looking more like next year for our Regional here in Frisco.
          Thanks,
          Fred
