Paint markings on 78 interior parts

Am getting closer to putting the interior back in my 78 PC so looking over some of the main parts. Forgot the gauge cluster and console plate had yellow paint #'s written on them. Is it just a coincidence that the last 2 digits of my VIN is 47? Or could it signify to the assembly line worker to install these parts into Pace Car 3947 coming down the line? Or something else entirely? Thanks

Your post got me curious and my console was separated from the console...just now got around to checking it out. And what do you know! It also has the last two digits of the VIN...2324.

As you well know, Pace Cars were loaded with convenience options like power windows. These were assembled at the St Louis factory per the ordered option. It makes sense as each assembly was completed, it was marked for a specific vehicle.

Interesting. Thanks Tom! Bet you will see the same on your gauge cluster when you take it out. I don't see any markings on the speedo/tach cluster. Can see the the outline of what was some sort of sticker on it. Maybe was part #? Although I suppose the installer could tell at a glance if the cluster was for a L48 or L82 car.

Now I gotta check my 77 and SA 78. 77 has rear window defroster so panel would be unique to cars with that option. Interesting posts, thanks!

I would guess the gauge cluster was marked because there was a bench test of the two assemblies. Otherwise, I can't see a unique option that would have been included in the cluster. Can't see how L82 or L48 would have mattered unless linked to the speedo/tach cluster. Perhaps the entire three assembly were tested due to the wiring harness.

Only difference I can think of, L48 or L82, is the tach? Installer would have to put in the correct tach/speedo cluster.
