Re: finish of spare tire hardware
The front attaching bolts are zinc plated with a zinc-plated hex nut and black plated split-ring lock washer. They are threaded into weld nuts in the frame crossmember above the differential. The rear support bolt is zinc plated and screws into a round barrel nut. The barrel nut is supported by a [black]semi-gloss dip-painted U-bracket, bolted to the frame with two black hex-head bolts and split-ring lock washers.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: finish of spare tire hardware
Thanks gents. Yeah I had acquired these from a vendor fairly well known for original GM hardware and these were advertised as "restored to original". Then I started seeing NOS brackets on eBay that were black. Not saying this was anything deliberate...but... The lesson being...which I am sure most on here have learned often the hard way...take NOTHING on face value when it comes to restoration and parts... and double/triple check details on anything and everything....part numbers, finishes, etc.

Well, it's easy enough to paint the bracket semi-gloss black. The fact that it was zinc plated won't interfere with that.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: finish of spare tire hardware
Very interesting. I had always thought that paint would not adhere well to a plated surface. I presume always a good idea to prime first?***************

Re: finish of spare tire hardware
Paint does not adhere well to a chrome-plated surface. However, it will adhere to a zinc plated finish. If you use a self-priming paint, no primer would be required or necessary.
Also, if you wished to remove the zinc plating, that's easy, too. Just immerse for a short time in hydrochloric acid (pool acid). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
