    Upper Bearing Wire Gauge?

What is the gauge of the upper bearing wire on a 63? The replacement one I have is a 10 gauge while the original has a 12 gauge!

Re: '63 Horn Wiring Color Green or Black?

My horn operates the second I put power to the car. As you can see in the pictures, some of the rubber insulation around the bearing has worn off some. Could this be shorting out against the steering mast? Also, consider the differences in the attached bearings!

      Jerry,

      Jerry,

Yes thats likely why the horn is always on. If that green wire touches ground it'll activate the horn relay.

If it's disconnected and still blows, it's probably the relay or a wiring fault.

The wire gauge is more like 16G or 14G. It's only a few hundred milliamps to energize the relay.

Jerry, Bob is on it. That upper bearing may have worked at one time but not really what you want. Plus the wire has problems.

I noticed in your bottom photo, it appears you have a proper 1963 upper bearing assembly there. Are these yours?

            Rich,

Yes, these are mine. The 63 one was replaced because the bearing was quite loose on the shaft. I fixed the upper bearing by putting black electrical tape around the bearing and put it back in the steering mast. It sems to have fixed the problem.

            Thanks

              Ok good, nothing like original.

Do you have the special retainer/spacer on the shaft to hold the bearing snug?

                Re: Upper Bearing Wire Gauge?

I do have the sleeve/retainer in place up against the upper bearing. So far so good!
