Hinge removal on Mid Year roadster deck lid

It's been a long time since I've run across something that completely whipped me, but unless there's a trick this is it. When pulling the chassis out of my '66 roadster several months ago a helper broke the captured nuts loose on the two rear most body mount bolts. I wasn't in the shop at the time and he decided it was a good idea to whack the heads off with a die grinder so the body could be lifted. It seems impossible to work with the captured nuts problem with the hinges in the way. Near as I can tell there are 3 bolts in each. I have the bottom ones out and the inners, but can barely get a finger to the outers and 30 minutes of trying to feel for them with a socket and extension has yielded nothing but some very loud words that I had all but forgotten. I can't imagine any way that this could be done on a production line in anything like an efficient manner. I'm almost to the point of popping a lone in each side of the back pan with a small hole saw and plugging it later. Surely somebody has had a hinge out of one of these and can give me a hint.

Thanks Harry. I bought my first Corvette, a very rusty '63 coupe with a DOE (damned ole' Eckler) front end in 1975 and have the chassis out of dozens of my cars since, with several Top Flights and 2 Golds. I can truthfully say this is without a doubt THE WORST thing I've ever attempted with one of my cars or anybody else's. I would love about 30 minutes in a room with brass knuckles with the MORON who designed the deck hinges as far as the way they attach. I can't begin to imagine how they can be assembled on a line that has to move in less than half a day I could say how I got the outer bolts out, but am afraid I'd get booted out of here after all these years.

Harry that is one awesome, accurate, and well done article!

Do I have that in our DoRD Sticky? If not, it will be soon.

Proof, once again, of the value of the TDB!!!
