Tom, see item #1 on the attached photo. The Lever Assembly is commonly referred to as a Z-bar, thanks for your reply.

So the bar in Rick's post, attaches through the firewall, from the clutch pedal to the left lever side of the Z bar? And that location is under the vehicle just above the frame rail on the driver's side.

Correct, then there is another bar or rod that connects to the bottom RH side of the Z-bar that connects to the clutch fork on the bell housing.

And an interesting side note about this rod. If the car came with a auto trans, the hole in firewall for rod to pass through is not there. But it is punched in the metal side of firewall as is the 3 screw holes that hold the rod rubber boot on. Can be seen looking at firewall from the inside of car. A hole saw and drill bit from inside the car through the fiberglass outer part of firewall using the punched holes as a pattern and all set.

So, can a person surmise that the assembly line workers would do the same thing if car was a manual trans and left it alone if an auto?

Long as you have all the parts, it's not bad at all. Way easier with no dash and wiring plus of course steering column has to be out.
I had a bolt on z bar frame bracket and was no way I would use it. Looked very flimsy. Weld on bracket is much beefier and sturdy. Was a head scratcher just where it goes on the frame though. Mocked up the Z bar before pulling engine and looked at pics of frames that showed the area. My brake booster & MC off so pretty easy to get in there to weld. Also helps when motor is out!
I thought the hardest part is getting the shifter attaching bracket located correctly on the removeable auto crossmember and placement of the bolts for the mount. Did not want to use a Hurst shifter. Then cutting the tunnel in the right area and patching it up where the auto shifter dimple was. Still need to drill the hole in firewall for the reverse light switch wires. If anyone has a pic that clearly shows that location, would like to see it.
I bought a new main wiring harness for a 4sp application so wires for the clutch neutral safety switch are there. Otherwise would need to wire that in from auto shifter and the reverse lights.
