C1 Driver side Wiper Transmission Install

I was finally able to get the passenger side windshield wiper transmission installed in my 58.

After spending a lot of time with the driver side, I don't see how this thing can get installed. I have everything out except for the pedal assembly.

Do I have to remove the pedal assembly to get it installed?

Again I am just trying to get it installed and not hooked up yet to the pulleys.

I am totally baffled with this.

    Help me please!!!! LOL

    Thanks,
    Jason

Jason, I know the driver side is the worst on to get at. Been there, but I forgot how I did it. You're not alone, I always dreaded those things.

Most times, I'd install those transmissions when the interior was empty and no dashpad or cluster or heater or defroster vents or cowl vent, etc. and probably no pedal box either)

What exactly gets in the way? Can you get up there for a few photos? Here's one of a '60 I added some notes to describe what's up there.

I guess I will remove the pedal assembly. Everything else has already been removed.

The metal/aluminum support section and the instrument fiberglass cove get in the way. Kind of hard to explain and don't have pictures.

I will pull the pedal assembly so there will be nothing really back there.

The passenger side had a square section cut out behind the cove insert which allowed me to install that side.

I read that this install was covered in a former Restorer article but of course all the Restorer articles are not available for NCRS members to download or access or even buy which ticks me off so much with the NCRS. Seems like the NCRS is only interested in making money versus helping restore older Corvettes. I can't even buy the CD containing the old articles and was told they will probably never be able to purchase from the website. Sorry for the rant but I am irritated that the NCRS has articles covering how ro restore stuff but they won't scan the articles and upload them. And they wonder why they are not able to get younger members to join.

        Jason,

Yes that cutout on the Pass side was done IMO..... at the factory. Every one I've ever worked on has that cutout. Even with a empty cabin, that cove protrusion gets in the way, so they must've cut it for the assemblers.

Can you tell me what's in your way on the driver side? The hardest part is trying to get up in there and be all twisted up, then you remember that you forgot the tools.... Arghhhh!

**So I understand your frustration about the articles. But that's what we're here for.... to help you when you have questions too.

I have every Restorer from 1988 to present, and the special earlier editions they had available then which I bought when I joined. If you find me the year/volume/issue of the article, I'll dig through my pile and scan it for you. It'll have to go email to you as we can't send attachments in PM's.

Appreciate it Richard. You have always been super helpful.

I read someone that posted they wrote about how to do those install in the Restorer. I then looked up to see what year and volume it could have been and this is what I vame up with.

          VOL 42 #1 SUMMER 2015
          VOL 47 #1 SUMMER 2020
          VOL 7 #3 WINTER 1981
          VOL 15 #2 FALL 1988
          VOL 20 #2 FALL 1993
          VOL 24 #2 FALL 1997

All of the above have articles in them that talk about the wiper transmissions for a C1. Not sure which ones cover the driver side install for a 58.

          My email address is jpearce98@gmail.com.

I greatly appreciate the help Richard. You are the best!!

Ok good I'll dig through mine and see if I can find those. The early 80's may be tricky as I loaned some early ones out many years ago and hopefully I got them back.

Steve, Good link. I forgot Joe C. had that article. This one....

Jason, I found several of those other ones. I took some quick phonecam scans and will email to you shortly.

Jason I'm out at a appt but I emailed 4 articles to you. Please check your spam folder to make sure I didnt get added to the bad-boy list.lolol

The Gary B article is probably the one that'll help th most with removal/install. Sorry if the order of the files is chaotic.

Re: C1 Driver side Wiper Transmission Install

Thanks everyone. With Rich's help in sending me those pictures of the articles he had I was able to get the driver side transmission installed.

One of the articles mentioned that you need to come in at an angle from the interior side of the steering column. I swear I tried every angle but coming in at the angle was the trick.

                        Appreciate all the help guys.
