'70 Big block starter shield #3943467

My heat shield was missing when I purchased the car. Does GM part #3943647 still apply? If not, are these available from restoration vendors?

Googling the 3943647 part number returns this shield which is what my '72 454 shield looks like. Highly doubt it's still available from GM if that's what you are after. It is reproduced and carried by the regular vendors.

Someone on eBay claims to have two NOS examples of GM 3943647 for sale. For 10x the cost of the repro. Search eBay for the part number to find them.

          Thanks guys.
Can I install the shield after the starter is installed and wires terminated or is the shield integrated with the starter installation?

It goes on after the starter is mounted and all of the electrical connections are secure. It's been a while since I was under my car looking at the shield's mounting, so... As I recall, the hole that secures it to the solenoid is slotted and the other hole uses the same bolt that the starter support bracket to the block uses. The solenoid connection has a special slotted barrel nut to secure it.

              Thanks, Owen.

Attached is a picture of the positive cable and solenoid wiring (pre shield install). Being so close to the manifold bothers me but I don't see any other way to route it as all publications show the cables go over the solenoid to land on the terminals.

              Is this OK?

                  Thanks Owen.
I feel better now that your positive cable is just as close to the manifold as mine.
