    66 outer heater box sealant

Looking for some help in trying to recreate the sealer that was used from the factory on the outer heater box to the firewall, was a asphalt base tar sealer/glue i believe. I thought of heating a tube of asphalt roof sealer and seeing how that flows out or if there is something out there i don't know about i am all ears
    thanks Bob Peckham 66450

      Bob,

Whatever you choose, apply it to a test panel first and let it fully cure to see the final shade and texture.

i have talked to a few people and a rubber type sealant is not what they are looking for , more of an old school kerosene based sealant that is no longer available ,i am going try warming up some of the roof sealer and see how it flows out on a old piece of fiberglass i have .
        thanks for the info

          Bob,

Last year, a neighbor and I used some asphalt tar sealer on our common driveway to seal cracks in the asphalt. My neighbor bought a big block of the stuff at Home Depot. I used a "weed burner" under a metal bucket to melt the stuff. It worked great on the driveway. I have never tried this stuff on any car. I have seen stuff like this used as seam sealer in older metal body cars. If I were ever to apply this in the situation you are talking about, I would let it cool as much as possible to the point where the flow rate was minimal. Whatever the factory used, it had to be hot enough to flow. One thing about this asphalt tar sealer is the smell. It stinks! As for my car back three decades ago, I used Latex Window Glazing Compound to seal the heater box. However, I only used it around the gasket area under the box and kept the outer edges of the box along the firewall clean. My car is a driver - so no need to re-create anything. Good luck.

Robert, In addition to the other options presented you could try what was advised to me for my 1962 when I repaired my leaking heater core. 3M Strip caulk in black part number 08578. Frank

                    Robert,

Ran out of time last night to look up the article for the outer heater box sealant. Will do it tonight.

Somewhere back in my lizard memory I recall that the sealant was only used when the car failed the water test on the line. Saying that I did not use any when I restored my 63 about 12 years ago. Never received a point deduction. Others, please chime in.

When I removed the heater box during restoration of my former 66, there was no sealer around the heater box so I did not put any back when I reinstalled it. I got a deduct at a regional meet.

I see Don found the article before I did. Here is a picture of the sealant applied at the outer heater box.
